Family Photo Session at the You Yangs (Featuring Three Boys, a Lot of Rocks, and Zero Boring Moments)

If you’ve ever wondered whether the You Yangs are a good spot for family photos, here’s the short answer: yes — especially if your kids have more energy than your coffee budget can handle. As a family photographer in Melbourne, I’m always hunting for locations that let kids be kids without anyone falling into a lake or needing a three-hour hike. The You Yangs tick all the boxes.

Why the You Yangs Work for Family Photography

The You Yangs are just 40 minutes from Melbourne, easy to get to, and full of those big granite boulders kids love climbing. It’s rugged, but not in a “bring a compass and emergency blanket” way. More like: park the car, walk a few minutes, and boom — epic views.

Three Boys + Rocks = Predictable Chaos

This session was with three boys (8, 6, and 3). If you’ve ever met boys within that age range, you already know what happened: climbing, running, collecting sticks, arguing over who had the “best” stick, more climbing, and then some more climbing.

Perfect.

Kids who are busy and curious are incredibly photogenic. They forget the camera exists, and that’s exactly what makes the photos feel real.

The Views Aren’t Bad Either

Between the rocks and the wide open views, the You Yangs give you backgrounds that don’t need much help. The light hits the granite beautifully in the late afternoon, the textures are interesting, and it doesn’t look like every other park in Melbourne.

It’s distinct. A bit dramatic. But still family-friendly.

What I Focus On During These Sessions

  • Letting the kids lead (within reason… and gravity).

  • Keeping the parents relaxed — no stiff posing or forced smiles.

  • Capturing movement, climbing, exploring, and the quieter moments that happen in between.

  • Making sure everyone stays safe on the rocks while still getting adventurous photos.

Tips for Families Considering You Yangs Photos

If you’re thinking about booking a session here, a few quick notes:

  1. Wear shoes with grip. Thongs are not the vibe.

  2. Late afternoon light is best. You get that warm glow without the harsh midday shadows.

  3. Expect your kids to get dusty. It’s fine — they wash.

  4. Bring water. It can get warm, even outside summer.

  5. Be open to going with the flow. The rocks often decide the shot list.

Final Thoughts

A You Yangs family session is perfect if you want photos that feel natural, outdoorsy, and a little adventurous without actually needing survival skills. If you like the idea of exploring, letting the kids run wild (safely), and getting a gallery full of real, relaxed moments, this location is a winner.
