This season is truly enchanting! Elevate your photos from good to extraordinary!
FIRST: COLOURS
Use neutrals as your base. Accentuate with accent colours.
Choose THREE colours and work around those. You can have varying tones and shades of those colours. This creates a cohesive and pleasnant scheme.
NEUTRAL PALETTE
You could even stick with just neutral colours and it would be perfect.
ACCENT PALETTE
But if you want some pop of colour, you can accent with one or two pieces with a brighter colour.
WHAT WORKS:
For fall, mustard yellows, sage or emerald greens, browns, creams make gentle and dreamy photos. More vivid colours like brighter yellow, purples and pinks will create a sharper, bolder look. It all depends on your style and how you want your photos to look.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK:
Bright white and true black. They are very stark and can throw off the balance. Go for off-white, creams and beiges. And charcoal grey, brown or a dark green.
Blue. I love a bit of blue. Maybe one piece of blue. But too much and your photos will become too cool. Blue has a way of sucking out the warmth of a photo.
SECOND: MOM
I always suggest going for a dress. The right style of dress can be flattering, flows nicely and make you feel really comfortable and beautiful.
What style look good and photographs well? Boho style dresses are usually my go-to. There are many versions of boho but what I like about it is the flowing skirt, the slightly loose fitting nature makes it really nice to wear and photograph.
This is the time to go all out. Get the dress thats off the shoudler, has a large slit in the skirt, has a sheer fabric. Get the dress you often see and think, I wish I could wear that but where would I wear it? Here, in your photo session.
Here are some examples:
If you don't want to wear a dress, that's okay. You can wear a flowy skirt and a top. And if pants are your choice, you can make it interesting by layering with a cardigan, knit vest, or a duster.
SHOES: Wear shoes that are comfortable and you can get around easily. My photo sessions are outdoors. It can be grassy, or sandy or rocky. You'll want shoes that won't break and can protect your feet. In fall season, I recommend ankle boots. Depending on where you are, if it's wamer or cooler, you could also go for sandles.
Here are some examples:
THIRD: DAD
Let's be honest, dads are the easiest to dress.
But there are a few things to consider.
Pants or slacks are better than jeans.
Avoid white or black
No trainers, flip flops or white sneakers.
Below is a examples of shirts, pants and shoes.
THE BEST: THE KIDS
With the kids, they are basically the same as adults. But much much cuter!!
Dresses
cardigans
pants
shirts
vests (not puffy)
beanie (relaxed is good)
overalls
skirts
leggings
sweaters
A few tips! If girls, especially babies/toddlers, wear dresses, make sure they have tights on. It helps to avoid seeing diapers. I often suggest that instead of a dress, put your baby/toddler in overalls. They are SO adorable, keeps them warm and parents don't lose an arm under the dress!

WHAT NOT TO WEAR for fall photos (or any time, really)
Black or White - go for grey, creams, browns, greens.
Not too much blue - why? Blue is awesome!! True, but blue is a cool colour and fall is already cool and muted. Warmer tones make for rich and comforting photos.
No matchy matchy. It's better to coordinate than to match.
Patterns. Limit one patterned item of clothes for a group of 4. The bigger the group, you can introduce more patterns.
No loud or bold patterns. Keep them small and subtle. Avoid stripes! Especially really thin stripes. They don't translate well in camera.
Absolutely no neons.
No graphics or logos.
No sports shoes, or shoes that are uncomfortable to wear.
No tight clothing, or clothing that doesn't fit well.
No modern/digital watches. (apple watch), it dates the photos.
These tips should help you to make choosing clothes easier so you get amazing results with your family photos.
